Great Achievement of Sabay Lynam

After what has been a very difficult couple of years for sports events, we finally have some fantastic news to announce.  We are glad to share that Sabay Lynam, a Form 6 student, has been offered a full time contract with the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) to pursue her dream of becoming a professional rugby player.

During her time at the YHKCC, Sabay has won countless awards for sports including The Sportsperson of the year 2018, the Grantham award and has led the girls rugby team to two All Hong Kong championships. This year, unfortunately, due to the pandemic there was no school rugby, meaning that in her final year, Sabay didn not get one final chance to pull the YHKCC jersey. She was, however, still turning out in the Women’s Premiership, the highest level possible within Hong Kong, for Kowloon and this season, despite her age and lack of experience, Sabay became an influential player for the team.

On receiving the contract offered, Sabay shared “I’m super honored to be given this opportunity. It has aligned well with my plans to pursue rugby and learn more about the sport and myself. This opportunity will allow me to better myself as an athlete, not only physically but also mentally. I’d like to take the opportunity to thank Mr. Tuff and Mr. Fraser in particular who showed a lot of faith in me and have aided me in becoming the player I am.”

Mr. Brad Tuff, the teacher in charge of the school rugby team said, “Sabay is one of the most naturally gifted rugby players I’ve ever come across but what makes her exceptional is her dedication, determination and attitude. She truly is one of a kind. This is great for Sabay and she fully deserves it. I’ve been hearing great things from Iain (Iain Monaghan HK women’s 7’s head coach) regarding her progress and he thinks she has real potential. I look forward to seeing what she goes on to achieve in the game.”

We are proud of Sabay and wish her all the best with her future endeavours within rugby and look forward to watching her representing Hong Kong for many years to come. Please join us in congratulating Sabay!
